The Prayer Request of Jesus

Jesus stops. In the midst of a noisy, overwhelming, chaotic moment, He sees beyond. He sees behind. He is moved with compassion and does something incredibly telling: He shares a prayer request. With a world that’s waiting to know - what if His prayer were our response? What if this was how we answered the call?

Notes

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?[c] And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:9-17 (ESV)

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Matthew 9:35-38 (ESV)

Where is the harvest?

1 - Across the Street

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 (ESV)

2 - Around the World to Proclaim as you go

‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand. ’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9 Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart.
Matthew 10:7-11 (ESV)

3 - From Around the World to Across the Street

The aftermath to audacious prayers: When they didn't find Paul and Silas, they dragged Jason and some other believers in front of
the city officials. They shouted, "Those men who have made trouble all over the world are now here in Thessalonica,
Acts 17:6 (GWT)

Those who have turned the world upside down have come here too

Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. 12 And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.” 13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.” 17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized. 19 So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus.
Acts 9:10-19 (NKJV)

    1. As believers in Oklahoma, we tend to lean towards this “Gospel Privilege,” taking for granted the very life giving Word of God we have at our fingertips, and the ease-of-church-going freedom we have. Have you ever taken for granted the access and freedom you have with the Bible?

    2. Being in the “Bible Belt,” in Edmond/OKC/Guthrie, we tend to think that everyone knows who Jesus is, that they all have had an encounter with Him, but we know that’s not true. Why do we think that they know? Do we think that they don’t want to hear it? How would they know if you don’t share what saved your life? Is their life not worth saving to you? So the question is, are there areas or places in your life where you have assumed others knew who Jesus is? Is there someone on your heart right now, that you know you need to share Jesus with? Who do you need to share Jesus with? Who are you GOING TO share Jesus with this week?

    3. Pastor Ashley talked about being a troublemaker for the gospel, will you be a troublemaker for the gospel? How will you be one? (starts with our prayers)

    4. We know the call, we know we need to answer the call, how are you going to respond to the call? Who else doesn’t know, and who will tell them?

    5. Ask the Holy Spirit what He’s saying to you. What is He saying?
