Rest Must Be Stronger Than Exhaustion

How can a people with so many time-saving devices live such lesuireless lives?

Addiction is the relentless pull to a substance or an activity that becomes so compulsive it ultimately interferes with everyday life.

Matthew 11:28-29
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-29 (MSG)
Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.

Jesus' yoke is better than a bed because a power nap is not what we need to find rest for our souls; we need a new framework for life.

St. Augustine
Our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.

REST MUST BE STRONGER THAN EXHAUSTION

Mark 2:23-27
One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"..... And he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

Sabbath | Shabbat | To Stop & Delight

Justin Whitmel Earley
Sabbath is a whimsical rebellion against the idea that work is the only important thing in the
world.

Ruth Haley Barton
Sabbath keeping is the linchpin of a life lived in sync with the rhythms that God himself built into our world, and yet it is the discipline that seems hardest for us to live. Sabbath keeping honors the body's need for rest, the spirit's need for replenishment and the soul's need to delight itself in God for God's own sake.

Rich Villodas
Sabbath keeping is a weekly twenty-four-hour period of unhurried delight with no have-tos or ought-tos, resulting in deep rest and renewal.

1. The Sabbath (24-hour period of unhurried delight) was made for man.

2. Man was not made for the Sabbath.

Genesis 2:2-3
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

SABBATH is a way to show the rest of the world what redeemed people look like and how redeemed people live their lives.

Walter Brueggemann
People who keep the Sabbath live all seven days differently.

Framework for Sabbath

1. Resisting Work

2. Resting & Worshipping

3. Pleasure Stacking

Dan Allender
The Sabbath is an invitation to enter delight. The Sabbath, when experienced as God intended, is the best day of our lives. Without question or thought, it is the best day of the week. It is the day we anticipate on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday- and the day we remember on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Sabbath is the holy time where we feast, play, dance, have sex, sing, pray, laughs, tell stories, read, paint, walk, and watch creation in its fullness. Few people are willing to enter the Sabbath and sanctify it, to make it holy, because a day of full delight and joy is more than most people can bear in a lifetime, let alone a week.

John Mark Comer
If you're new to the Sabbath, a question to give shape to your practice is this: What could I do for 24 hours that would fill my soul with deep, throbbing joy? That would make me spontaneously combust with wonder, awe, gratitude, and praise?

As with God's grace, the Sabbath is never a reward; it's a gift.

Psalm 34:4-5
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
