The Pool of Bethesda | What Do You Want?
John 5:1-8 (ESV) 1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed— and they waited for the moving of the waters. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
Do you want to be healed?
John 5:2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
John 5:3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed—
John 5:3b They waited for the moving of the waters.
John 5:4 (NIV) From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.
John 5:5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
John 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well!
Well - you have been restored to health
John 5:14 NIV “See, you are well again.”
Our past affects our present and therefore affects our future.
John 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
On the other side of a “yes” to Jesus is radical life change.
C.S. Lewis “A familiar captivity is frequently more desirable than an unfamiliar freedom.”
John 5:7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Psalms 46:1 God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
Healing Is Possible!
“Marriage is hard. Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Obesity is hard. Being fit is hard. Choose your hard. Being in debt is hard. Being financially disciplined is hard. Choose your hard. Communication is hard. Not communicating is hard. Choose your hard. Life will never be easy. It will always be hard. But we can choose our hard. Pick wisely.”
John 5:8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
Freedom Begins With A Willingness To Change
“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
“Get Up”
“Pick Up Your Mat”
“Walk”
Therapeuo A healing touch that comes with corresponding actions.
