Where Are Your Accusers

Jesus frequently posed thought-provoking questions that delved deep into the human condition. Questions like, "Why are you anxious?" "Why do you call me Lord?" and "Who do you say I am?" In this series, we'll look at some of the challenging questions Jesus asked others as we contemplate, search our hearts, and answer them for ourselves.

Dead To Rights - undoubtedly guilty, and there's no wriggling out of it, no matter what you do

John 8:3
The scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery.

Caught = seized eagerly

John 8:3b
And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.

Caught in a trap orchestrated by the Pharisees, the woman faced public shame for being 'caught in adultery, in the very act.
R.C. Sproul

John 8:5
Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” 6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him.

John 8:6
But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

Jeremiah 17:13
Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water.

John 8:7
So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

Leviticus 20:10-12
If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, even with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and adulteress must be put to death.

John 8:9
Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

John 8:10
When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

1. Jesus throws conviction at the stuck up

2. Jesus throws grace & truth at the messed up

Our job as disciples is not to fight darkness, the job of a disciple is to be light!

When Jesus says, 'He who is without sin,' He redirects our focus from judgment to compassion. Our mission as Christians is not to fight darkness but to be the light, bringing the warmth of God's love to a world desperate for healing and forgiveness." A.W. Tozer

In what other ways might you be throwing stones?

Where are your accusers?

The name Satan means accuser, adversary

Ephesians 2:9
it’s not by works, so that no one can boast.

Romans 8:1
Therefore, there is now  no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Isaiah 1:18
Come now, let’s settle this, says the Lord though your sins are like scarlet,I will make them as white as snow.

Settle = to settle an argument in a court of law determining what is right.

Romans 8:33-34
Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.

John 8:11
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you;

Jesus has the right to cast the first stone, but He doesn’t throw punishment at her; instead of throwing judgment at her, Jesus throws mercy, grace, and acceptance at her.

The ability of Jesus to say 'Neither do I condemn you' stems from His role as the just judge who, in His divine plan, would put Himself on the hook. He willingly bore the consequences of our sins on the cross, allowing us to experience His unmatched grace."
Tony Evans

Sin is a killer!

The ugliness of sin, with death as its wages, necessitated a payment that we could never afford. Jesus, in His boundless love, took our place on the cross to pay the price and cleanse us from the devastating effects of sin.
Timothy Keller

With the question, 'Where are your accusers?' Jesus not only revealed His authority as the ultimate Judge but also silenced the voices of condemnation. His response, marked by mercy and grace, affirms that, in His presence, accusers have no lasting voice to bring shame and guilt."
Tim Challies

Jesus throws conviction at the stuck up

What the world needs now is not churches full of people who are standing in their arrogance with rocks in their hands, ready to throw down; we need churches full of people who are in the dirt with those who are broken and hurting, ready to take the focus off of their sin and put it on God’s son.

Jesus throws grace & truth at the messed up

Where are your accusers?

God doesn’t condemn you of your past; Satan can’t condemn you of your past, So stop condemning yourself.
